Storage & Organisation

During the summer, I gave myself a project of overhauling my entire room. I threw out all unnecessary junk and organised everything properly. I really hated the corner desk I had before, it was far too big and was wasting space. I went to IKEA and found exactly what I needed, for sale. I wanted it to be black or white to match the rest of my furniture, small enough to fit in the corner and I wanted storage. These photos were taken a few months ago, but everything looks exactly the same now!

  • Zebra print folder holder in this I keep any incoming documents, so assignments, handouts, mail, leaflets, reading material. Anything that I have to go through, read, file or reply to really.
  • In the visible black & white boxes I keep cables, chargers, earphones and phone bits and pieces, things that I use every couple of days or once a week to do with devices.
  • Magnetic whiteboard is so handy, sometimes I use it to write my to-do list for that particular day. Behind my computer I have a magnetic pencil holder filled with some pens & highlighters that I grab every so often.
  • The pink pencil holder is actually an old Gemma Kidd makeup brushes holder but I use it to hold a couple of pens in 4 colours and some highlighters.
  • In the long drawer I have a box (Soap & Glory sparkly one!) where I keep tissues, SD cards, current earphones, USBs, Mac batteries & charger. I then have scissors, stapler, punch hole, calculator, etc in another box. On the other side, I have my college external hard-drive, college notebooks and folders.
  • The little drawer on the right is my "organised" drawer, it has a pencil case with spare pens, post it notes, a screen cleaner, blogging notebook, day planner and a "digital media" notebook.
  • Adjustable Shelving I keep college folders and books on the bottom shelve with a "stuff to blog" bag. I keep dvd's at the back on the middle shelf with a box of extra notebooks, on the top shelf I have a box of computer backup cd's and all those booklets you get about your computer.
  • Cable area at the back has an adapter so all cables lead to there, also put my backup external hard-drive here so I just have to plug in the cable to backup my computer.

My Tips

  • Enjoy your space: Make it you and personalize your work area. You want to feel good while you work, it will motivate you.
  • Everything has a place: Before, my desk would get cluttered very quickly, but now that everything has a place I notice that it's clean and tidy all the time.
  • Make use of the space: The desk I had before took up so much space, had a huge working area (which was handy when I was drawing for my Architecture course but no longer needed) and I was losing space in my room. This new desk is smaller but I filled it with storage boxes that allow me to actually use the space, instead of stuffing away things I don't need.
  • Make it accessible: The drawers in the previous desk only came out half way so they were hard to access, meaning they got filled with absolute junk. Keep things you use most often near you, so you don't have to leave your work to search for them. Your the target and everything has to get to you, so most important and most used need to be the closest. Keep the actual desk as neat and tidy as possible.
